Red and yellow flamelike plumage. Common in western half of US. Timing: summer. Prefers breed in coniferous forests; migration any shrubby or wooded area. Medium with a small, stout bill; plumage is black, orange, yellow. Red in head is from rhodoxanthin, probably obtained from insects. Northernmost breeding tanager. Diet includes insects; fruit in winter. Oldest wild individual recorded was 7; one captive bird lived to 15. Population ~ 8 million.
